BIOS stands for Basic Input Output System and is a defacto standard for defining software used to communicate devices internally. This program code starts functioning at the time of powering on the computer. The running of BIOS is called booting program. During booting, it identifies the hardware devices like display card, hard disk or CD, keyboard, mouse and more. You get system containing motherboard installed with BIOS built-in ROM. By using BIOS one can configure hardware and can enable or disable any of the system components using this user interface. Using the BIOS interface, you can easily set-up the system clock, that is, you can set the CPU clock to a higher value. When you do this, the system does tasks with higher processing speed.

Tips to access BIOS
You shall power on your Sony VAIO laptop, press F2 for a while to get into the BIOS. The same function is performed by ‘delete’ key in some computers and F1 for the others. If you get the BIOS on your screen, you can change the settings. You can change the parameters for each hardware devices and can set the value of system clock. You are allowed to make changes on hard drive settings and other settings. If you make a change by mistake and want to delete it, click ‘Exit without saving changes’ option.
Boot from optical drive
You can boot the system from DVD drive also. Insert the DVD on the disc drive. Press F8 until you get BIOS screen. Then move to ‘Sony’ or ‘VAIO’ option and click it. A page containing different settings shall appear. Press the arrow until you get ‘Boot’ option and then select the DVD drive. Press escape button and once you choose ‘Save your settings’ option to reboot your system. You can see the system booting up and your program in the DVD shall run, thus making it clear to you that system need not boot into operating system.
You are allowed to boot from the external hard drive also, that is, you can boot your system into an operating system despite of using another operating system in your hard disk. To boot from the external hard drive, use the same procedure as above. Instead of selecting optical drive after booting, choose external hard drive. You can run the operating system in your external hard drive.
